In the morning our 5 day tour to Erg chigaga Sahara Desert stars from Marrakech. We will drive up the High Atlas on a spectacular pass road until we reach the highest point, the Tizi-N-Tichka at an altitude of 7415 ft (2260m). The mountains are almost uninhabited and full of different colors depending on the time of the year, however, their rock formation is impressive all year round.
After crossing the pass and its impressive countryside we are able to visit the town of Talouet via a small and bendy road. Here, in the midst of the countryside, you will find a Kasbah bearing the same name. It was built in the middle of the 19th century and was once the official seat of one the most powerful Berber tribes. The Moorish style clay fortress is impressively furnished with Faience mosaic, painted ceilings made of cedar wood and Carrera marble tiles.
After driving through the picturesque Ounila valley, which introduces you to the Southern Moroccan lifestyle, we will arrive at the Ksar of Ait Benhaddou. It was appointed a
UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987 and served as a setting for many monumental movies.
This largo fortified village located on the slope of a hill is among Morocco’s oldest and most beautiful settlements on the southern edge of the High Atlas. During your visit you can stroll through the nested labyrinth of houses, towers and reservoirs, and enjoy the view of the desert from the top of the hill.
You will spend the night at a traditional hotel.
After a bendy journey across a wildly ragged, rough mountain landscape and crossing the Tinfifft pass 5577 ft (1700m), we will reach the small town of Agdz. A visit of the Ksar with the Kasbah Tanougalt, the former center of the tribal region of the Mezguita Berbers, is worthwhile. Along the Oued Draa (Morocco’s longest river),we will pass by the Draa village, one of Morocco’s most fertile valleys. Marvel at the gapless chain of date trees grows along the river and the wonderful Oases and well-kept clay fortresses.
The town of Zagora, which used to be an important and legendary camel trail station, lies in midst of a palm oasis on the banks of Draa and the edge of the desert. A detour to the KSAR of Amezrou, which is known for its jewelry workshops, is worthwhile. After a short drive we will arrive Tamgroute, which is famous for the Zaouia of the Nassiriya order from 16TH century that can be visited just like the adjoined Koran library.
We will continue driving into the desert until we get close to Mhamid, the most southern desert oasis of the Draa valley.
This is where the journey to the closest sand dune region where we will reach our bivouac, starts.
A camel tour until dusk is perfect for exploring the desert.
You will spend the night in a nomad’s tent under the stars.
